Company founder Ronald Murphy commenced operations at the age of 15 in 1936. Originally he delivered groceries and freight around Corner Brook with a horse and cart. The first commercial vehicle was purchased in 1942 and the company was granted Incorporation in 1958.

Murphy's Transport Limited has been a successful pioneer in many of the markets it has diversified into throughout the years. At its peak, the company employed 60 men and women and operated in access of 60 pieces of equipment fulfilling several different services including:

  • Municipal Waste Removal Service for the City of Corner Brook and Surrounding Areas
  • Dump Truck Service
  • Truck Load Freight to All Parts of the Island
  • Commercial Waste Removal Services Since 1958
  • Boom Truck Service Since 1960
  • A Fleet of 30 School Buses for 28 Years
  • Utility Pole Haulage and Handling
  • Excavation Business
  • Tanker Service

With each new service the company provided there was new equipment needed. The company purchased and introduced the first boom truck, enclosed waste compaction truck, excavator and tri axle semi dump trailers to the West Coast.

It was his ability to adapt to customer needs and desires that enabled his company to grow. Some of the larger contracts filled by his company were:

  • Waste Haulage
  • School Bus Drivers
  • Truck Load Freight for Atlantic Gypsum
  • Delivery of Telephone Poles for Newfoundland Telephone
  • Truck Load Freight for North Star Cement

In 1981 Murphy's Transport changed hands as Franklyn and David Murphy, sons of the owner, assumed ownership. The company took on a new name "Murphy Brothers Limited". Before entering the management side of the business they fulfilled all positions within the company including boom truck operators, truck drivers, bus drivers and shop duties.

Murphy Brothers has succeeded for over 30 years and it continues to operate on the same philosophies that started the company back in 1936. Today, Murphy Brothers Limited operates a containerized waste rental business that serves the West Coast of the Island, provides residential garbage and curb side recycling collection for the City of Corner Brook, residential collection for the different municipalities around Corner Brook and are the operators of the Corner Brook City Transit.

This company is currently in its third generation. Ethan Murphy has been involved with the company full time since graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of New Brunswick in 1999.

Ethan is also the President of Corner Brook Waste Management, which is an affiliated company that is responsible for operating the Wild Cove landfill site.

Daniel Murphy returned home from Halifax in 2008 after completing his Journeyman Red Seal Welding Certificate from Nova Scotia Community College.

Murphy Brothers Limited has always provided the best possible service to all its customers and is constantly looking for new business ventures to explore.
